About Shift Masks

Simply put, shift masks create a reusable pattern that is applied to a base shift and may significantly reduce the number of shifts configured in the Shift area which could improve performance. Shift Masks are created when several people are on the same shift with the same start time and duration, but the day off cycle changes on an individual or position basis.

Shift Masks are used along with the regular shift assignment to create an extra day-off or an extra working day. The shift mask may be attached to the person’s Assignment or attached at the Position level. The latter may reduce the need to reassign shift masks during the position bidding process. 1

Common Shift Mask usages include: Kelly Days, Payback Days, Special Days, Cycle Days, and more.

For example, some organizations use payback days. A Payback day falls outside of a person’s standard shift pattern, but a part of their permanent shift assignment. The Extra Day shift mask type shows the mask pattern on the person’s calendar similar to the shift but with a hollowed out shift box to highlight that this is an extra working day. See Shift Mask Types topic for sample images.

Conversely, some organizations have business rules that include an extra day off. Although it is a person's typical shift day, they will have the day off. The Day Off shift mask type shows the mask pattern on the person’s calendar as a Day Off.

IMPORTANTS
Do not create shift masks for groups of personnel that earn varying overtime rates and you need a payroll feed from this application. For example, personnel earns double time in Overtime wages if they worked on their third non-scheduled day. If this is the case, build a single shift with multiple shift times.
1 Applies if the Bidding add-on module was sourced and your agencies bids on days-off.
